Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is similar to a colonoscopy in that a flexible scope is passes from your anus to visualize your colon.
Unlike a colonoscopy, a sigmoidoscopy is only meant to visualize the lower colon up until the splenic flexure.

This is a great test to evaluate diseases of the lower colon such as rectal bleeding or lower left sided abdominal pain.
Furthermore, the preparation is much simpler and sedation is rarely required.
It usually takes less than 5 minutes to complete the exam.

Tips for a better sigmoidoscopy

You will need to take an enema so have petroleum jelly handy to lubricate your anus prior to inserting the enema.
Your anus may get sensitive after the enemas so have baby wipes available to wipe more gently.
Although the preparation does not call for any diet changes, it would be better to have a light supper the night before and clear fluids only for breakfast.
If you suffer from constipation, taking a laxative the night before will be helpful.

I always use a gastroscope to perform a sigmoidoscopy.
A gastroscope is thinner and more flexible. This helps to make the exam more comfortable.
